Report on the Freedom Walk Held on 1st October 2024 to Commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Celebration
Introduction
On the 1st of October 2024, in commemoration of Nigeria's 64th Independence Day, a 'Freedom Walk' was organized by Crystal hub, an arm of The Elites' Community Hub, bringing together about 50 youths to raise awareness and campaign against the rising social vices affecting the nation. The event aimed to not only celebrate the country’s freedom from colonial rule but also to address modern-day issues undermining the progress and well-being of Nigerian society, particularly among the youth.
Objectives of the Freedom Walk
The 'Freedom Walk' had the following key objectives:
Promote Youth Advocacy: To provide a platform for young Nigerians to speak out against prevalent social issues such as drug abuse, cybercrime, and gender-based violence.
Raise Awareness: To educate the public on the negative impact of social vices and the role of citizens in curbing these challenges.
Encourage Positive Change: To inspire a sense of responsibility among young people to be active participants in nation-building and the fight against social ills.
Event Highlights
Kick-Off and Route: The walk commenced at 9:00 AM from the Elites' College, 41 Gbola Onibiyo Street and covered a distance of 5 kilometers, passing through key landmarks within our community. The event was characterized by enthusiastic participation, with youths carrying banners and placards displaying powerful messages such as "Say No to Drug Abuse," "Cybercrime Destroys Our Future," and "End Gender-Based Violence."
Speeches and Sensitization: At the conclusion of the walk, speakers addressed the crowd. They urged the participants to stay committed to rejecting negative influences and contributing to a brighter, more prosperous Nigeria.
Impact of the Walk
Increased Awareness: The event garnered considerable attention both locally and online, with hashtags related to the Freedom Walk trending on social media platforms. This led to increased public discourse about the importance of addressing social vices.
